National Guardsman finds home burglarized after helping Florence victims. Communnity sets up GoFundme Page

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An Army National Guardsman in North Carolina spent days helping victims of Hurricane Florence after the storm ravaged communities across the state, but he found himself a victim when he returned home to “an empty, ransacked house.”

But when people heard about Luis Ocampo’s plight and shared his story online, donors came in droves to help replace some of the items that were stolen.

According to a GoFundMe page by one of Ocampo’s coworkers in the National Guard, he was on active duty helping the Florence relief efforts and came home to find that burglars had gone through his house.

WSOC in Charlotte reports that Ocampo’s girlfriend and their 1-year-old son were out on Thursday night when the burglars struck. The thieves took a gun, a big-screen TV, a gaming system, a school laptop, and some specialty coins and jewelry. It’s those last items that Ocampo’s girlfriend said were “irreplaceable.”

The GoFundMe page was set up to help Ocampo replace some of the other items. A goal was set at $5,000, but within about 18 hours, donors had raised close to $15,000 for Ocampo’s family.
